AIMAccessory & MessageSaver
I created AIMAccessory and MessageSaver back in 2002 to help me manage offline messages to my AOL Instant Messenger account.
MessageSaver was the screenname that I actually used. Once the bot was running, users could send an IM to it like this: tell (screename) message.
When (screenname) came online, MessageSaver would send them the message (and tell them it was from you). It was pretty popular - I think I had
somewhere around 10,000 users at peak.
It's written in Perl, so you'll need some libraries from CPAN, and I have no idea if the protocol has changed, but
I'm giving the code away, so feel free to play with it if you'd like. Please just give attribution to me if you make changes or distribute it further.
